I’ve always been drawn to the things that other people might overlook. A look. A shadow. An expression. Sometimes even the things that aren’t traditionally considered beautiful.
That’s a big part of how I approach photography.
I’m Mark Davis, photographer and creative behind Mark A Davis Photography. Based in the Albany, NY area, I specialize in portrait, editorial and creative photography.
For me, a portrait shouldn’t just show what someone looks like. I want it to feel like something. Sometimes that means keeping things simple and letting the person in front of my camera carry the photograph. Other times it means building an entire concept around wardrobe, lighting, color and an idea.
Either way, I don't want to make the same photograph everyone else is making.
One of the best things someone can say when they see their finished portrait is, “That’s really me.” Not a version of themselves they were told to become. Not somebody else's idea of what they should look like. Them.
That's what I'm after every time I pick up the camera.
